Cooked Up Changes at Harbor Bar, About Done

Amid the clammer of construction and perceived chaos among contractors, one can’t help but notice the smiles on every face of the Meighan family as Clear Water Harbor’s expansion project, rapidly moves toward completion. Maureen Mondello summed up the group owners collective excitement “Keep in mind, we have been “making due” in a space designed as a motorboat showroom for the past 30 years.” “Needless to say, these improvements were long overdue.” Standing in the shiny new kitchen it is obvious the renovations have been very well thought out. “ We’ve been making serious mental notes on what to improve for the past decade” said Pat Meighan. Caitlin Meighan spoke of meeting with sister Maureen and her parents about the plans for the kitchen. “We agreed to think in terms of what would be good for the Harbor, now and twenty years from now.”
While wiping down the gleaming new stainless steel sinks, Mimi Meighan insisted upon delivering a few important points. “Please let our customers know that as far as our food is concerned, we listened... and will continue to listen”. “We did not take away any customer favorites”. “We also wish to stress that every recipe for every dish, including our homemade soups, right down to our salad dressings will stay exactly the same”. “If anything, even a specific component were no longer available from a purveyor, we would taste-test in order to find an equal or better ingredient”. Mimi also put a viscous, cold, dark winter rumor to rest...”of course the Mushroom Swiss Burger is still on the menu, never a doubt it would be back.” Just like the now famous Mushroom Swiss Burger, It seems every Harbor customer has a favorite menu item. A few customers have even commented that they might like an alternative to frozen pizza. So on this day, Mimi and the girls baked a few homemade pizzas and passed out slices to the hard-working staff and contractors as they worked inside and out getting the Harbor ready for the April 15th opening. “We are still researching a few favorites”. “We won’t launch pizzas until we find just the right combination” said Maureen.”We don’t intend on being a pizza place, we just like to give our customers what they crave.” Speaking of cravings, “Oh my gosh, the Steak Burger” Caitlin is expressive, now... “It’s one third pound of juicy goodness; really, delicious, we are putting that on the menu, immediately!”
The renovation utilizes every inch of space without compromising any existing service areas. The kitchen will now feature a spacious food prep area. New ovens, a steam table and a new grill, span the center of the kitchen. Dedicated refrigeration units are conveniently located near the cooks and a beer cooler featuring underground refrigerated lines will guarantee the delivery of cold beer to the deck. Mimi smiles “We will be circulating cool air through the grill area for our cooks, now”. “So, the Harbor will no longer be the second hottest place to work this summer, next to the Waupaca Foundry.” Fresh air from the Chain O’ Lakes will continue to cool indoor restaurant patrons. A service door to the deck will better serve the outdoor seating area. The deck will feature an additional flat screen TV and perhaps most exciting of all, is Pat’s ingenious invention to extend the “Harbor Season.” A permanent, radiant outdoor heating system. “Spring and Fall are great times to reconnect with family and friends and now the deck can be enjoyed for a few extra days or even months!” A couple of other questions abuzz among Harbor regulars were answered by Mimi. “The height of the building is not to accommodate living quarters or a dance hall.” Mimi laughed. “The large concrete fire walls and stacking refrigeration, component equipment made it necessary to build upwards.” A larger, safer work area is the result, a priority in planning the kitchen renovation. This new efficient space will also allow staff to serve large groups of customers who love to gather at The Harbor for Lunch and dinner.
Caitlin and Maureen are truly pleased that much of last years staff has agreed to return this year. The friendly staff and grill cooks, indoors, will remain despite the big, new kitchen. Bar Manager Jason Rasmussen offered his input during the renovation “It’s part of the charm for the patrons of the indoor bar to visit with the cooks” “To see the food being prepared and enjoy some appetizers, we didn’t want that to go away”. The collective, positive attitude and excitement can really be felt within The Clear Water Harbor as scrubbing, sweeping and stocking goes on, all around, at a frenzied pace. The new and improved Clear Water Harbor season kicks off April 15th. April 17th the high energy rock band “Ask Your Mother” will perform live and from there, The Harbor will “rock and roll” Spring through Fall. Boy, doesn’t it feel good to say those five magic words “see you at The Harbor!”

Ugly Ice Time

With some exceptionally warm temperatures recently, the ice is melting fast on the Waupaca Chain O' Lakes. The earliest the ice has gone out on Miner Lake (recently) is March 28th. Both pictures taken from the East shore of Miner Lake
